2005 ALUMNI LAUREATE SCHOLARS SELECTED

Alumni Laureate Scholars are chosen on the basis of leadership skills, citizenship, achievement, personal integrity and involvement, in and out of the classroom. Scholarship criteria include a grade point average of 3.5 or above and a minimum score of either 27 on the ACT or 1100 on the SAT.

The BGSU Alumni Association announced the program in 2002 with an initial investment of $1 million. The first group of students received the scholarships for the 2003-04 school year.

“The Alumni Laureate Scholars program allows the recipients to become active members of the BGSU campus and contribute to it in ways that will affect it for years to come,” said Kelly Vetter, a 2003-04 Scholar.

The number of scholarships awarded varies each year depending on funding.

Katrina Caldwell Katrina Caldwell of Hilliard, Ohio is majoring in early childhood education. She graduated from Davidson High School where she was a four-year member of the marching band and a three-year member of the pep band, student council, French Club and Renaissance Club. Her senior year, Caldwell was National Honor Society vice president and co-editor in chief of the school yearbook. The daughter of Ron and Deborah Caldwell, she is co-founder of '4 the Kids', an organization that ships toys to underprivileged children outside the U.S.


Natalie Olson Natalie Olson of Plover, Wis., is majoring in psychology and Spanish. A graduate of Stevens Point Area High School, she was active in Spanish Club, National Honor Society and the school choir. As a senior, she had the lead role in the musical production of “Titanic.” A National Student leadership Conference participant in 2004 and creator of her own pet care business, Olson is the daughter of Bruce and Dorothy Olson.


Valerie Schenck Valerie Schenck of Middletown, Ohio, is majoring in early childhood education. She is a graduate of Edgewood High School, where she was inducted into the National and French honor societies and was a four-year member of the soccer and track and field teams. The daughter of Mike and Connie Schenck, she was also active in 4-H and various community service projects throughout high school.


Applications will be available beginning August 2006 and are due in November 2006.



2004 - Five students named Alumni Laureate Scholars at BGSU

Five incoming Bowling Green State University students have been named Alumni Laureate Scholars.

Receiving full tuition and a $1,000 book award annually are Danielle Champney of New Middletown, Megan Greenwald of Grafton, Jamie Hoover of Frazeysburg, Jenna Klamfoth of Bucyrus and Bobby Hoffman of Marietta, Ga. The students will also participate in leadership workshops and community activities and work with alumni leaders.

Jenna Klamfoth Jenna Klamfoth of Bucyrus is the daughter of David and Joyce Klamfoth and plans to major in pre-nursing at BGSU. She has a 4.0 grade point average at Wynford High School, where she has been a member of the varsity volleyball, basketball and softball teams. Captain of the volleyball team last fall, she was named to the all-North Central Conference second team and received honorable mention in the Northwest District. Klamfoth is class vice president and a member of the yearbook staff, National Honor Society and 4-H.


Megan Greenwald Megan Greenwald of Grafton, who plans to major in biology/pre-medicine at BGSU, is the daughter of Edward and Linda Greenwald. She attends Midview High School, where she carries a 4.0 grade point average. Greenwald has taken several courses at Lorain County Community College and Ashland University as well. An Academic All-Ohio selection in soccer, she is a member of National Honor Society, a tutor in the OhioReads and Youth-4-Youth programs, and the first student ever appointed to the Midview Endowment Fund board. She is also active in 4-H and a volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital, where she was asked to participate in a new ER Ambassador program.


Danielle Champney Danielle Champney is from New Middletown and is a student at Springfield Local High School where she has a 4.0 grade point average. She plans to major in mathematics education at BGSU. The daughter of Edward and Paulette Champney, she is treasurer of Student Council and the Spanish Club, and editor of the school newspaper and yearbook. She is captain of the Academic Challenge team and a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Teen Action Group. She was a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program and attended the National Young Leaders Conference last year in Washington, D.C. Champney is also co-founder and president of the Future Educators of America Club at her school.


Jamie Hoover Jamie Hoover is a 4.0 student at Tri-Valley High School and plans to major in child and family community services at BGSU. The daughter of Lynn and Janice Hoover, she is president of her class, vice president of the German Club, and secretary of the Ruriteen Club and Student Council. She is also a member of National Honor Society, the Drama Club, the Symphonic Choir and the District IX Honors Choir. Hoover, who started a Bible study group at her school with three classmates, is a Service Learning volunteer and active in 4-H and the Meadowview Church of Christ.


Robert Hoffman Bobby Hoffman, who carries a 3.5 grade point average at Walton High School in Georgia, plans to major in business at BGSU. An Eagle Scout, he has been involved in Scouting for 12 years and has earned 24 merit badges through his service activities. He is a member of the Walton lacrosse team and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He is the son of Michael and Lynne Steele Hoffman.



Inaugural Alumni Laureate Scholars 2003-07

Ryan DietrichRyan Dietrich is specializing in accounting and finance at BGSU with a 3.7 GPA. He is involved with the University and College of Business Administration Honors programs and volunteers at the Children's Resource Center in Bowling Green. Dietrich also works at First Federal Bank 15-20 hours per week. A graduate of Napoleon High School with a 3.67 GPA, he is the son of Angela and Joe Dietrich. In addition to high school coursework, Dietrich took several college-level courses at Northwest State Community College and BGSU. His was a member of the varsity soccer team, serving as team captain, and was named to the Great Lakes League academic team. Dietrich also volunteered as a coach and referee for youth soccer teams.


Janna CarpenterJanna Carpenter is a sophomore majoring in visual communications technology at BGSU with a 4.0 GPA. She is involved with the President's Leadership Academy, Student Alumni Association, University Ambassadors and the Visual Communication Technology student organization. A graduate of Eastwood High School with a 4.246 GPA, she is the daughter of Scott and Linda Carpenter. Carpenter was actively engaged in high school with the concert choir, school musicals, show choir, drama club and the National Honor Society. Outside of the classroom, she is a member Black Swamp Players and Trinity United Methodist Church Choir and Hand bells. She was also involved with the Manhattan Dance Company. After college, Carpenter hopes to design layouts and advertisements for Automobile Magazine or Ford Motor Company.


Mary K. GoskyMary K. Gosky is majoring in communication disorders at BGSU with 3.8 GPA. She is involved with the Honors program, Student Alumni Association and BG Buddies. A graduate of Bay High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gosky. She held a 3.97 GPA in high school and was involved with Key Club; Treble Ensemble, A Cappella and Ladies Show choirs; National Honor Society; Council of Presidents; junior varsity softball, and HERO. In addition, she volunteered at the Youth Center, Salvation Army and Bradley Bay Nursing Home. Gosky plans to pursue a master's degree in audiology.


Cole HatfieldCole Hatfield is majoring in business at BGSU with a 3.3 GPA. He volunteers at Ruth Ann's House in Port Clinton, Ohio, and works for TDH Enterprises Inc. A graduate of Port Clinton High School, he is the son of David and Donna Hatfield. He held a 3.94 GPA in high school and was on numerous occasions for his work with the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Hatfield also helped organized a benefit lunch with actress Kate Mulgrew for a local domestic violence shelter.


Kelly VetterKelly Vetter is specializing in accounting and finance at BGSU with a 4.0 GPA. She is involved with BG Buddies, Student Alumni Association and the Honor's Program. A graduate of Ontario High School, she is the daughter of Bud and Wendy Vetter. She held a cumulative 4.0 GPA and was ranked first in a class of 144. Vetter has volunteered in her community by participating in Supper on the Square and helping to clean up the Ontario High School stadium. She was a member of the varsity soccer team, band, drill team, student council and basketball cheerleading squad.


Robert FilipucciRobert Filipucci is specializing in international business at BGSU with a 3.8 GPA. He is involved with University Ambassasors, Student Alumni Association and is a Spanish tutor. Filipucci also works for Pak Mail in Perrysburg, Ohio. A graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School, he is the son of David and Julia Filipucci. He held a 4.341 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Students Against Drunk Driving, Math Academic Team and Key Club. Filipucci volunteered with the Kiwanis Club and Big Brothers/Big Sister of Northeastern Indiana. Filipucci has also traveled to Mexico as part of a mission trip to assist with renovation projects.
